Carnival in Plouharnel, April 11

Place: Plouharnel, a small town in Brittany... around 500 km from Paris

Date: April 17, 2011

Event: Town carnival

Lucky us arrived right on time for the launch of the town carnival in Plouharnel. There was quite a crowd! You will see Obelix and his menhir in one of the photos, but also a Chinese dragon and beautiful local kids with their parents and teachers I guess...

Chocolate Menhir in Plouharnel

3 meters high, 200 kilos of chocolate for this chocolate menhir in Plouharnel - it was made at the Biscuiterie des Menhirs, Sunday April 17, on a polystyrene structure covered by 4 cm of chocolate. The biscuit shop announced that it would be on display all through the summer.

Crèpes, pancakes in Auray

For our last night in Brittany, we wanted to try La Belle Bio, a crèperie - galette restaurant in Auray. My daughters and I had the most delicious caramelized apple with salted butter caramel galette for dessert. My husband took a galette with caramelized bananas and salted butter caramel. See for yourself:

I recommend La Belle Bio crèperie which has a nice heated terrace upstairs, a friendly staff and the food is excellent.

Back from Brittany

We're back from a week in Brittany, in the land of menhirs, dolmens and crèpes!

I'll start here by a few words about our trip to Belle Ile. This island is a 45 minutes boat trip from Quiberon. Belle Ile is gorgeous, it's rugged landscapes captivate the eyes. Our trip to Belle Ile was on the 21st of April, we reserved a ferry+bus tour through Les Cars Verts agency. Didier our guide was very friendly and told us a few stories about the island. The tour included a visit of a biscuit factory... that was tasteful! I'll talk about crèpes and biscuits in another post :)

Here are a few shots of "Les Aiguilles de Port Coton" which has inspired Claude Monet... and a map of Belle Ile.

Cinnamon rolls... c'est trop bon!

We love cinnamon rolls which we discovered during our holidays in the USA. There's not so much cakes with cinnamon here in France. Since we're unfortunately not going to the US so soon (and I'm sad about that), well we had to try our own cinnamon rolls from a recipe we found online on a French website but I can't recall which one! Actually I did not do any glazing to avoid too much sugar.
Here's a photo... they were so good as you eat them warm from the oven!

Play by Marivaux

Oh I'm back online and had been quite busy once again... So let's see end of March we went to the theater in a nearby town and saw a play by Marivaux "Le jeu de l'amour et du hasard"... "The Game of Love and Chance" where young gentleman Dorante comes to visit his betrothed. Not sure whether she will please him, he decides to swap places with his valet. Same thing happens with the young lady, Sylvia. The game is to observe and assess... Luckily for all parties, the valet falls in love with Lisette, the servant. And the real bourgeois falls in love with Sylvia...  At the end, let's say "Ouf" in French... or "phew" in English ?!

A very funny play, the theater was packed and we had a lovely time... My daughter joined the theater club at her  high school and she's quite fond of this activity and it's a good opportunity to see professionals in action.

The stage was inclined and there were these doors that opened and the furniture and set popped out for each scene. It was an interesting idea and I guess somewhat challenging for the artists who had to run and walk on a slope during two hours.
